Kennebec River
Tubing
"The Forks Trip"
(June thru early
September)
Our
Kennebec River tubing adventures nicknamed The Forks Trip start at a village on the Kennebec River called
The Forks. The Forks is at the confluence of the Dead and Kennebec Rivers and
is a "Mecca" for the whitewater enthusiast in Maine. We will be tubing from The Forks to the
Appalachian Trail crossing in Caratunk a distance of about 8 miles. These trips are pretty
much an easy float; the river is generally shallow with good current and occasional class
1 (easy) rapids for the entire way. The river is very scenic in this area and makes for a
fun filled afternoon trip for the entire family. This is a great fun family
adventure! This guided Maine tubing trip includes a
custom designed river tube,
lifejacket, lunch on the river and a shuttle back to your vehicle. Kids from 5 to 75 years old have
loved this trip!
Price is $40 per person (children under 12 are half price!)
We also offer
river tube rentals on this trip for those who
would like to guide themselves down the river. Our rental package includes
the use of one of our custom river tubes, a life jacket and a shuttle back
to your vehicle in our van for only $20 per person. (kids
under 12 are only $15) Rentals
are by reservation or by chance and meet at our base camp in Caratunk at
11:30 AM and 1:00 PM daily after June 18th. We are on US Route 201 just south of
the village on the side away from the lake. Watch for the big
Red tube!
Kennebec River
Tubing
"Middle River Trip"
Our exciting
"Middle River Trip" tubing adventures on
the Kennebec River start at the Carry Brook put in and run down to the take out
area at The Forks. This
8-mile section of the Kennebec has many big
waves, rapids and fast current for the entire trip. This adventure takes advantage of the
new weekend 2400 CFS (cubic feet per second) releases from the dam at Harris Station. The new
lower levels on select Saturday and Sunday afternoons in July and August expose many rapids that are normally washed out with the
normal higher level releases. The Kennebec River valley is very beautiful and wild in this area with no
roads, bridges, camps or other signs of development for the entire trip.
This is a challenging section of the river that requires good upper body
strength to maneuver the tubes through the rapids. You may consider trying
our easier "The Forks Trip" to get the hang of "toobing" first. Our new river
tubes are very stable and ride the waves like they are glued to the surface. This guided
tubing
adventure includes a custom designed river tube, helmet, lifejacket, and shuttle to the
put in. The minimum age for this trip is 15.
Price is $50 per person

The Dead River
Tubing Trip
We will be tubing a 4-mile
section of the Dead River starting at Spencer Brook and running down to the gravel pit
take out. The Dead is a dam-controlled river that has recreational water
releases of various water levels throughout the summer. The river will be running
between 700 to about 1800 cubic feet per second for our trips. This is a great level for a
exciting high octane tubing trip.
The rapids are nearly continuous class 2 and 3 for the entire trip! They start out with Spencer
Rips, a short but intense class 3 rapid. Below Spencer the river slows briefly, a
chance to lay back and enjoy the beauty of this fantastic river! The break is short lived
though, for soon the rapids begin again. First a couple of class 2 rips leading up to a long,
fun filled rapid known as The Mine Field. The Mine Field is
nearly a mile of waves, boulders, ledge drops and eddies. The river is
quite shallow here with many possible
routes. We will take a break at the large pool just below the Minefield to
catch our breaths, then we head downriver again to the next class 3 rapid called
Haydens Landing
Rapid, which is also known as Humpty Dumpty. The remaining sections are
class 2 rapids and quick water to the
take out at the gravel pit. We have been tubing this section of The Dead for
many summers and have yet to find a better whitewater tubing trip anywhere! This unique
guided tubing adventure includes a custom designed river tube lifejacket, helmet and shuttle to
the put in. This is not a beginners trip but if you like whitewater, this is
a blast! The minimum age for this trip is 15.
Price is $50 per person
